š¶ļø Why OpenAIās New Model o1 is Redefining AI Safety Standards
OpenAI has made a giant leap with unprecedented technology showcased in its new generative AI model, o1.
AI is moving fastālike, really fastāand governments are stepping in to keep up. This week, two big stories made that crystal clear.
On one hand, OpenAI has made a giant leap with unprecedented technology showcased in its new generative AI model, o1. Its launch brings up questions (and surely concerns šØ, but letās take it easy). In the political sphere, it was announced that the United States will host the Global AI Safety Summit in November āthereās no time to wasteā amid fears of misusing these advancements. š
And speaking of changes, if creating short video content is your thing, you might want to consider producing more of that format on your LinkedIn profile. Watch out, TikTok!

Rethinking AI regulation: The impact of OpenAIās o1
OpenAI recently introduced its new generative AI model, o1, which focuses on reasoning by taking more time to solve problems like physics and math. Despite having fewer parameters than its predecessor, GPT-4o, o1 excels in specific tasks, highlighting that bigger models arenāt always better.
This has sparked debate about AI regulation, particularly laws like Californiaās SB 1047, which set safety standards based on the cost and compute power used to train AI models. Experts like Nvidiaās Jim Fan suggest that smaller models with advanced reasoning capabilities could outperform larger ones, making it clear that tying regulation solely to model size or compute may be outdated.
While policies like California's bill allow for adjustments to evolving AI technologies, experts warn that current regulations donāt fully address real-world risks. As AI technology rapidly advances, policymakers must now consider better metrics for assessing risk. Read more.
