Durk Kingma, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, has announced that he will be joining Anthropic, further enhancing the talent pool of the AI safety-focused company. In his posts on X, Kingma expressed his alignment with Anthropic’s mission to develop powerful AI systems responsibly.

With a Ph.D. in machine learning and a rich background in generative AI research at OpenAI, where he led the algorithms team, Kingma brings significant expertise to his new position.

Kingma’s hiring is part of Anthropic's broader strategy to attract top talent from competitors, having recently recruited former OpenAI safety lead Jan Leike and co-founder John Schulman, led by CEO Dario Amodei, who previously served as VP of research at OpenAI.

Character.AI’s fresh start after a billion-dollar deal

Character.AI is shifting focus after a $2.7 billion licensing deal with Google, which led to CEO Noam Shazeer’s return to the tech giant. The company has hired Erin Teague, a former YouTube executive, as chief product officer to enhance user interactions with AI.

Following the departure of key co-founders, interim CEO Dominic Perella announced that Character.AI is now centered on consumer AI solutions, with about 100 employees and plans to hire new leadership.

The platform has over 20 million monthly users and introduced features for users to call AI characters, facilitating over 107 million calls.
