Swing states hustle in startup funding

In the upcoming U.S. election, swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona are not only crucial for deciding the presidency but also stand at a median level in the startup funding landscape. Unlike major venture capitals hubs like California, Massachusetts, and New York, these swing states aren’t known for massive funding rounds. However, they aren’t "venture deserts" either, as they host several prominent startups and venture-backed companies across various industries, from tech and biotech to electric vehicles and gaming.

Each state has its unique startup ecosystem: Pennsylvania leads in biotech and robotics, Michigan shines with auto tech giants, North Carolina’s Research Triangle excels in gaming and biotech, and Georgia has a thriving, if modest, startup scene in Atlanta. Arizona attracts relocating entrepreneurs but lags in venture funds, Wisconsin supports e-commerce and biotech, and Nevada, though small, is diversified with battery and EV companies. Ultimately, while these states contribute significantly to the startup landscape, venture funding trends aren’t expected to impact election outcomes.

OpenAI’s chip dreams take shape for 2026

Source: Unsplash

OpenAI is reportedly shifting its focus toward developing its own AI chip in collaboration with Broadcom and TSMC, aiming for a 2026 launch. While initial plans included establishing a network of manufacturing facilities, OpenAI has now decided to prioritize in-house chip design instead. This move marks a significant step in reducing dependence on third-party chips, which could ultimately give OpenAI greater control over its AI technology and operational efficiency.

In the meantime, OpenAI has begun utilizing AMD chips, available through Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, to supplement its model training needs. Previously, OpenAI depended primarily on Nvidia GPUs, but ongoing chip shortages, supply delays, and high training costs have prompted the company to diversify its hardware sources.
